Summer@CIP: A Transformative Summer Experience with Real-World Results – Highlights from the Webinar

For neurodivergent students preparing for life after high school, the transition to independence can feel both exciting and overwhelming. That’s where Summer@CIP comes in—a two-week immersive program designed to build confidence, independence, and real-world readiness in a supportive, college-based environment.

During a recent webinar, CIP leaders Alicia Borden (Summer Admissions Coordinator) and Ed Rowe (Program Director, CIP Bloomington) pulled back the curtain on what makes this program so impactful—and why families continue to trust it year after year.

A Proven Program with Lasting Impact

Since 2009, Summer@CIP has supported thousands of students across the U.S., helping them strengthen:

  • Self-confidence
  • Social connections
  • Independent living skills
  • Readiness for college and beyond

Now entering its 18th summer, the program continues to evolve while staying rooted in its core mission: preparing students for the next step in life with practical, hands-on experience.

A Real Taste of College Life

One of the defining features of Summer@CIP is its immersive college experience.

Students live in dorms, eat in campus dining halls, and follow a structured daily schedule—mirroring what life is like at a university. With staff living alongside them (similar to resident advisors), students gain a safe and supported introduction to independence.

Even better, students earn one college credit during the program, giving them both academic exposure and a confidence boost.

Beyond Academics: Building Real-World Skills

While academics are part of the experience, the real focus is on life skills that matter most after high school.

Throughout the two weeks, students engage in:

  • Executive functioning skill-building
  • Social communication and relationship development
  • Self-advocacy (including navigating college disability services)
  • Daily living skills like laundry, budgeting, and organization

As Ed Rowe shared, Summer@CIP may be one of the only programs where students are expected to do their own laundry—and that’s by design. Every activity is an opportunity to practice independence.

Learning by Doing

The program blends structured curriculum with hands-on, real-life application.

A standout example: students plan and host their own social events. From budgeting and grocery shopping to coordinating with peers, they learn how to collaborate and execute a plan—skills that translate directly to college and adult life.

Students also explore career readiness through:

  • Resume building
  • Interview preparation
  • Understanding career pathways
  • Volunteer and internship exploration

A Structured Yet Dynamic Daily Experience

Each day follows a thoughtful rhythm:

Mornings:
Curriculum sessions covering topics like college readiness, budgeting, wellness, and social skills

Afternoons:
Interactive activities such as grocery shopping, volunteering, or off-campus outings

Evenings:
Social events, reflection time, and community-building activities like games or movie nights

With over 30 activities packed into 13 days, students stay engaged while also benefiting from built-in downtime to recharge.

Personalized Growth Through the Person-Centered Plan

A key outcome of the program is each student’s Person-Centered Plan (PCP)—a personalized roadmap outlining:

  • Strengths and challenges
  • Short- and long-term goals
  • Vision for the future

Students present their plans at the end of the program, building confidence and ownership over their journey.

Real Feedback, Real Progress

Families receive regular progress updates during the program, along with a detailed final evaluation assessing:

  • Social skills
  • Independent living abilities
  • Emotional regulation
  • Readiness for college life

This comprehensive feedback gives families a clear snapshot of where their student is—and what steps come next.

A Community That Lasts Beyond Summer

One of the most meaningful outcomes? The relationships.

Students often form strong connections with peers who share similar experiences. Many stay in touch long after the program ends—through group chats, meetups, and even returning together for future summers.

Multiple Locations, One Consistent Experience

Summer@CIP is offered across five U.S. locations, each providing the same core program with unique local experiences:

  • University of California, Berkeley (urban setting)
  • University of Central Florida (Orlando-based, outdoor-focused)
  • Westfield State University (suburban New England campus)
  • Indiana University Bloomington (classic college town)
  • Cal State Long Beach (coastal, Southern California setting)

Students can choose the environment that best fits their comfort level and interests.

Building Confidence Through Independence

A key philosophy of the program is encouraging independence—while still providing strong support.

Students are guided to:

  • Navigate challenges on their own
  • Advocate for themselves
  • Step outside their comfort zones

Even when activities feel intimidating, staff and peers work together to ensure every student feels safe, supported, and included.

From First Step to Future Success

For many students, Summer@CIP is just the beginning.

As shared in the webinar, one student who initially struggled with independence went on to enroll in CIP’s full-year program—eventually completing college courses, volunteering, and pursuing career goals with confidence.

It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes, all it takes is the right environment to unlock potential.

Is Summer@CIP the Right Next Step?

Whether a student is preparing for college, exploring career paths, or simply building independence, Summer@CIP offers a meaningful and structured way to grow.

With limited spots available—and some locations filling quickly—families are encouraged to explore the program early and find the best fit for their student.
