Celebrating 2026 Autism Awareness Month Across CIP Centers

Throughout Autism Awareness Month this April, students and staff across our CIP centers came together to celebrate community, connection, and inclusion through a variety of meaningful events and service projects. From environmental cleanups and volunteer initiatives to social celebrations and educational workshops, each center found unique ways to engage with their local communities while highlighting the strengths and contributions of neurodivergent individuals.

At CIP, Autism Awareness Month is not only a time to celebrate individuality and neurodiversity, but also an opportunity to strengthen community partnerships, build social connections, and encourage students to make a positive impact in the communities they call home.

CIP Bloomington: Giving Back Through Service

At CIP Bloomington, students embraced the spirit of volunteerism through several community-centered activities throughout the month.

Students and staff partnered with a local elementary school for the Lotus Blossoms Bazaar on April 2nd, serving as the event’s setup crew and helping prepare the arts and crafts fair for families and attendees. In the days that followed, students also had the opportunity to volunteer directly with children during craft activities, fostering meaningful interactions and community engagement.

Later in the month, students joined the City of Bloomington for a Jackson Creek cleanup project, working together to help beautify local outdoor spaces while promoting environmental responsibility. These experiences allowed students to strengthen teamwork skills while contributing to causes that positively impact the broader community.

CIP Brevard: Celebrating Inclusion and Social Connection

CIP Brevard focused on creating joyful, inclusive experiences that celebrated community and encouraged social growth.

The center hosted its 4th annual “Unmasking Autism” Spring Formal, an event designed to provide neurodivergent adults with opportunities to practice formal social skills and dining etiquette in a welcoming community environment. The formal has become a meaningful annual tradition that celebrates confidence, connection, and self-expression.

Students also organized a Spring Fest and inclusive egg hunt for neurodivergent children in the local community. Through games, teamwork activities, and festive celebrations, students helped create a welcoming and supportive environment centered around fun, inclusion, and shared experiences.

CIP Long Beach: Supporting the Community and Environment

Students at CIP Long Beach dedicated part of Autism Awareness Month to giving back through environmental service.

In partnership with community advocate Justin Rudd and the Community Action Team, more than 25 volunteers participated in a large-scale beach cleanup on April 18th. Working together to remove litter and protect local coastal spaces, students demonstrated the importance of civic engagement and environmental stewardship.

Following the cleanup, students returned to the center for lunch and inclusive group activities that reinforced community-building, teamwork, and shared accomplishment. The event highlighted how service projects can strengthen both local communities and peer connections.

CIP Berkeley: Building Awareness, Community, and Career Connections

CIP Berkeley celebrated Autism Awareness Month through a full calendar of educational, social, and service-oriented programming.

The month began with Community Spirit Week, featuring themed celebrations such as Crazy Hat Day, Crazy Sock Day, and “Light It Up Blue” Day. These activities encouraged school spirit, self-expression, and community participation among students and staff.

Students also participated in an Animal Enrichment Workshop in partnership with the East Bay SPCA, where they interacted with dogs, learned about animal training, and explored topics related to animal conservation and care.

During Earth Week, students partnered with San Francisco State University Greek life organizations for a community cleanup effort tied to Earth Day celebrations. The collaborative project reinforced the importance of community partnerships and environmental responsibility.

To close out the month, Career Week welcomed professional guest speakers from a variety of industries to discuss career paths and workplace experiences. One highlight included a presentation on the “Blue Envelope” initiative, a law enforcement program designed to improve communication and understanding during interactions with neurodivergent individuals.

Strengthening Communities Through Connection

Across all CIP centers, Autism Awareness Month served as a reminder of the power of inclusion, service, and community connection. Whether volunteering at local events, supporting environmental initiatives, hosting inclusive celebrations, or learning from community partners, students had opportunities to build confidence, develop important life skills, and make meaningful contributions to the communities around them.

These experiences reflect CIP’s ongoing commitment to helping students engage with the world around them while fostering understanding, acceptance, and authentic community involvement year-round.
