Mike Vaughn, M.Ed.

Mike has more than twenty years of experience in the education field, joining CIP in 2013 as the Social Skills Coordinator. In previous positions, he taught English and ESL in the Berkeley Public Schools for seven years, and taught acting and communication skills with various companies and groups for many years. He spent fifteen years teaching collaboration and leadership skills with a Berkeley boy scout troop. Mike also spent several years as a Sunday school teacher, and youth detention minister.

Mike has a strong belief in the student-centered and hands on learning model of instruction.

As the Social Skills Coordinator, Mike aspires to create a learning community that is safe, equitable, challenging, relevant, and fun for all students. He brings his passion for coaching social ethics, communication skills, public speaking, theater games, and media/filmmaking to his work. Students in his modules often present their findings and achievements to the community once a month and at the end of the semester. In collaboration with the Career Department at CIP, Mike facilitates the Soft Skills in the Workplace module. In this, he helps students develop professional social skills and communication techniques.

Mike holds a M.A in Education from U.C Berkeley, and a B.A in Theater/Broadcasting from Columbia College Chicago. He also trained with the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in a certificated program on the ethical, and moral development of young males (ages 12-26). He has presented, given talks, and hosted workshops with several groups, most recently with the Autism in the Media Conference at San Francisco State University.

Since 2013 Mike has served as the Director of Education at Berkeley Community Media. BCM is a not-for-profit public television station and media training organization. Mike heads up the Production Internship Program. He teaches narrative filmmaking and community news production. He has written, produced or directed hundreds of hours of live and scripted television and media programs. He recently co-founded a company focusing on the creation of original narrative and documentaries shot in Virtual Reality. He has been a professional actor since he was a kid, and occasionally performs in theater and media productions in the Bay Area.
