Hard-working students have more to look forward to
By Jennifer Hersch and Jessica Griffith, Berkshire Center students
We knew things were going to be different the day that we arrived at our new apartment. We are now technically off the Berkshire center campus. While we still have staff to fallback on, it feels like we will being doing much more on our own. It’s a very exciting experience for both of us. We feel more independent than we ever have.
We are practicing for entering CIP’s continuum levels next year where we will be fully off-campus and receive minimal supports. It can be difficult cooking and cleaning without the reminders and guidance of staff, but as roommates we will work it out. You will not believe the experiences you will have and the freedom you have earned!
While enjoying our new feeling of independence we are also still learning a lot about it. We have worked very hard to get where we are.
We lived on campus and had to prove to staff that we were ready for the move and that we can handle having more freedom. Our experience here is going to prepare us to live off campus, away from CIP, and develop our own supports through friends, family and co-workers.
