Akira, or “Guido”, as he is called, is moving to CIP’s 5th Level of Support, meaning he will move to his own apartment “off-campus” for the upcoming year and take a further step toward independence while retaining the appropriate supports and social connections through CIP Berkeley.
Starting in 2009 on a level 1, Guido has taken full advantage of CIP’s support and transitioned a level each year, gradually reducing his supports while building confidence through a variety of academic, internship, and social experiences. During this time he received his Associates Degree in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in Behavioral Sciences. He currently holds a paid position as Student Ambassador within CIP.
His overarching goals for the program are: 1.) Executive functioning within apartment organization, 2.) Navigating the college system and accessing services, 3.) Cultivating and maintaining friendships, 4.) Researching career possibilities, and 5.) Working as an admissions ambassador at CIP. He continues to take advantage of services with in CIP’s Health & Wellness, Social Thinking, Advising and Academic departments.
To aid in this off-campus transition, Guido is utilizing his Student Advisor in the process of researching apartments and learning how to search for an apartment based on the number of bedrooms, the geographical area, the cost, amongst other things. Guido has called apartment managers to ask questions, such as about rent prices, availability, and when to schedule a showing. Guido went to apartment showings on his own and when an apartment he found was available, he went to speak to the apartment manager to set up a time to sign the lease and pay the security deposit.
He is now planning his move and is excited about his next big step of becoming more independent.
