Students at CIP Berkeley visit the Green Festival on a semi-annual basis. In previous visits to San Francisco’s Green Festival students have absorbed information about what changes they can make in their everyday lives to reduce their carbon footprint.
This time students got down and dirty by volunteering in the Green Festival’s recycle room to be a part of the Green Team. Green Team volunteers help to educate Green Festival’s attendees about what can be recycled and the different categories for recyclables.
The Green Team is critical in making sure that each can (compost, recycling, mixed paper, and landfill) stay 100% uncontaminated so that everything goes in the proper can, therefore ensuring a high resource recovery rate.
At first students were skeptical of volunteering during the festival, especially since they were going to be sorting through trash, but the event proved to be very educational. Students were able to report to their manager, Joe, who provided the initial instruction and corrections to ensure the students were doing their job effectively.
Students were educated on the importance of building sustainable communities and were given a preview of all that the festival had to offer including more than 125 renowned authors, leaders and educators; great how-to workshops; cutting-edge films; delicious vegetarian cuisine and diverse live music; all-natural body care products and organic cotton clothing.
They were also able to gain a greater understanding of how much is wasted when an improper recycling system is used. Some students had a challenging time with the slower pace of the work and the length of the four hour shift.
The festival was organized by Green America a not-for-profit membership organization founded in 1982. Green America’s mission is to harness economic power—the strength of consumers, investors, businesses and the marketplace—to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society.
Others were satisfied with being able to work with their CIP friends and everyone enjoyed receiving a free Green Festival t-shirt for a volunteer job well done.
