By Jennifer Kolarik, CIP Brevard Career Coordinator
Chris Kennedy has been a student at the Brevard Center for the past 4 years. Over that time, he has propelled himself to new personal heights while presenting at conferences and open houses about his own experiences at the College Internship Program. At the Brevard Center Convocation and Awards Ceremony this May, Chris was honored with the CIP Student Ambassador Award for his contributions.
Chris grew up overseas and was not diagnosed with a non-verbal learning disability until tenth grade. His struggles at San Diego Mesa Community College led him to the Brevard Center in 2006. Two years ago, Chris received his Associate’s Degree from Brevard Community College. This summer, he will be graduating from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology.
Over the years, he has worked hard to raise his overall GPA from 1.74 to 3.16 and his GPA in Psychology is now 3.5. In addition to his academic pursuits, Chris has strengthened his skills in leadership, self-advocating, and socializing. He served as the Brevard Center Student Senate President for two years. Currently, he interns at the Bridges Academy providing mentoring to young children with learning differences and behavioral challenges. His career goal is to become a Clinical Psychologist.
Chris recently presented at the 17th Annual Visions Conference in Lake Mary, Florida. He shared tips for helping students with Asperger’s and Learning Differences to successfully transition to college and careers. In the past, he has also presented to educational consultants, families, and professionals at Florida conferences and workshops from Melbourne to Tampa. It has truly been an honor to have Chris as a co-presenter at conferences over the past four years.
As a student who has “walked the walk”, his words have tremendous impact. We at the Brevard Center thank him for sharing his story which has provided hope to many students and families while also empowering professionals. We congratulate Chris on receiving the 2010 Student Ambassador Award at the Brevard Convocation and Awards Ceremony. Chris, you will be greatly missed but we know that you will continue to move forward in your journey and will accomplish your goals.
