This Fall was spent planning for planting at the Brevard Center. Jodi Pierce, Head Student Advisor and Social Skills Coordinator, has been working with Scott Herber, Biology Instructor and Environmental Club sponsor from Eastern Florida State College (EFSC), on the Brevard Center Garden Club. Now that the Center has moved to a 5 acre campus, there is plenty of room for a citrus grove and 60’ x 60’ teaching garden. Scott and his students consulted with staff at the Brevard Center to customize the garden plans with edible landscaping throughout.
Beginning this month, students who participate in the Environmental Club at EFSC will work side by side to mentor and train CIP students to grow vegetables, herbs, and fruit on site. The Environmental Club will share plants from EFSC greenhouses and plots that tolerate the year round growing season in Florida. CIP students will learn how to tend to the crop, while forming friendships with EFSC students who share similar interests.
