During Wellness classes this semester, the students have enjoyed participating in Yoga and Pilates, which helps to strengthen their core muscles and also gives them relaxation techniques they can use on their own. “Yoga helps me relax and takes my mind off of the things that give me pressure,” first year student, Kiersten, said.
I have seen a marked improvement in their strength and flexibility over this past semester. The students have also been learning dance routines to popular musicals such as Mama Mia, and the choreography to songs such as Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, and “Black or White”. Dance has also helped to accomplish some of their Occupational Therapy goals such as: improved posture and balance, synchronization of leg and arm movements, increased proprioception, and spatial awareness of their bodies.
Through interpretive dancing they have explored individual expression and the communication of various musical styles.
