On Saturday, April 25th, College Internship Program students from the Brevard Center volunteered at the annual Melbourne Art Festival assisting young children who were making crafts in the Kid’s World area. Alex helped at the paper bag art station, while Thea and Aaron helped children to make masks and picture frames. In addition, Benny and Logan manned the painting station and passed out water to the volunteers. Benny said that he enjoyed participating in this community service opportunity. The other Melbourne Art Festival volunteers thanked us and said they were delighted that our students gave their time this weekend to help out.
CIP students also volunteered at the 2015 Cycle Jam for the Kids. The Cycle Jam is a non-competitive ride through scenic Brevard County that raises money for the Space Coast Early Intervention Center (SCEIC). SCEIC is a preschool that specializes in preparing children with disabilities (such as autism) and children without disabilities for kindergarten and beyond. The SCEIC is an internship site for one of the CIP Brevard Center students. At the Cycle Jam, one CIP student, Becca, took charge of the fruit, bagel, and cookie stand. Megan helped out at the Jimmy John’s stand while Cole manned the trash cans. All students stayed as well to assist with event clean-up. The SCEIC volunteer coordinators were impressed with the students’ hard work and thanked the students for their time. The CIP students enjoyed this community service opportunity… and Megan said she felt good about putting in a hard day’s work!
Jennifer Kolarik, CIP Lead Career Coordinator stated “As we wrap-up Autism Awareness month, I am proud that our CIP Brevard Center students have volunteered over 300 hours this year.”
