Each semester, students at each of the College Internship Program sites are expected to volunteer 10 hours toward charitable causes in the community. On Sunday February 22nd, 2009, Brevard Center students and staff volunteered at the Woofstock Festival, an annual fundraiser for the Central Florida Greyhound Pets of America.
The event, featuring dog contests, vendors, a silent auction and more, raised about $6,000 last year to offset operating costs for the organization which places retired racing greyhounds into loving homes.
In addition to fundraising, the festival is also a great opportunity for the public to become educated on whether a greyhound adoption would suite their lifestyle. Thanks to the students and staff who participated including: Daniel Eakin, Ashley Titone, Peter Snell, Jarrett Suhr, Sam Kirby, Joan Williamson, Tari Barkley, and Chris Johnson.
One of our CIP tutors, Ric Lasher, owns 2 retired greyhounds and is a member of Greyhound Pets of America. Ric thanks the students and staff who assisted at the event for helping to raise public awareness about these wonderful animals.
In March, students will be invited to give a hand at the Habitat for Humanity Strawberry Festival and Mardi Gras in the Park. In April, students will be invited to participate in the Autism Awareness Festival and Trash Bash 2009 at Pelican Park beach.
