Bloomington Center Head Advisor, Jim Walsh, is working with student Adria Nassim on writing a blog towards her career goal of being an autism advocate and public speaker. Adria has graduated from college and is using the blog as a networking and self-promotional tool.
Being no longer aided by the structure of a classroom environment, the blog also assists Adria in giving her a useful format to continue her post-graduate reading and writing. At first, Adria and I looked up service dog and autism videos on youtube to see what kind of videos there were.
In discussing what the blogs and videos did well and poorly, we discussed how to balance the personal and the professional in her posts, as well how to strike the balance between being informative and entertaining. Social thinking skills are put to use in networking online with other autism and service dog bloggers–making and responding to comments gives Adria real world practice for the kinds of questions, attitudes, and comments she will encounter when speaking in a more formal, real-time setting.
Jim and Adria have also set up an account with Google’s AdSense, so that Adria can learn how to manage making supplemental income through the relevant ads on her blog when they are clicked on.
