The first Parent Weekend for the Long Beach center happened on October 28th and 29th, and I’m happy to report that the event was a huge success. Parent Weekend is a wonderful couple of days where students and their families have an opportunity to meet with staff in person and spend some quality time together.
Our guest speaker for the day was Alex Plank, founder of www.wrongplanet.net, an online hangout for those with autism. Alex is a close friend and well-known in the autism community. He speaks frequently to groups and organizations all over the country so we were very lucky to have him as he proved to be a huge hit with parents and students.
He first screened “Autism Reality”, a documentary that he made several years ago. It included an interview with Temple Grandin and his parents as well as his own perspective about autism and some of the challenges he has experienced as a person with Aspergers. He spoke about how autism has affected his life from childhood through college and to where he is today, his relationship with his father, and the strategies that have helped him overcome his own challenges.
His talk was funny and touching, and like I said, we were very lucky to have him. We have plans for Alex to come to return to have lunch with our staff and students in the near future.
