CIP Bloomington student Anna H. is working on making more social connections outside of CIP. She recently joined “We Got the Beat,” a community drumming group which meets on Monday nights through a music therapy studio. “I look forward to seeing everybody every week, plus, it’s a good stress reliever,” she said. CIP helps students connect with resources and events in the community that they can stay involved with after they graduate from the program.
Although most of the group members are older than her, she said she still enjoys going, “We basically sit in a circle and play different instruments. It’s more like a music therapy group,” she said. “I like the jingle bells. They don’t bother me as much as the hand bells with my sensory issues,” she said. Anna also enjoys playing the rain stick. “Sometimes, the lady that directs the group will have me help her lead,” Anna said. “She says I have the most experience since I did marching band in high school.”
A few weeks ago, the group rewrote “The Candy Man” from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. “There is one woman, Harriet who I’ve become really good friends with, she said. “She really outgoing. She’s always got a good attitude and she’s really friendly. She always manages to say hi to me.” Anna said that being part of this group has taught her that it is possible to make friends outside of CIP.
